Linda’s “Good Reads” (Book of the Month)

Peaks and Valleys by Spencer Johnson

Our current times ask of us as leaders to choose to whether to be bitter and
gloomy about the economic situation or to take the opportunity for growth and reflection. Johnson’s Peaks and Valleys encourages us to do that. In Johnson’s engaging story telling style, you’ll read the book in no time. And yet, what you come away with is a since that all will be OK. You come to see that valleys are just a part of life, an intuitive statement but one we often forget. He reminds us
that we often fail to really appreciate the “good times” in his statement, “You can have fewer bad times when you appreciate and manage your good times wisely.”

In the opportunity to reflect during the valley times he gives this message, “The pain in a valley can wake you up to a truth you have been ignoring.” I
recall a particular valley time in my business and a close friend was the one who opened me to a truth I had been ignoring that totally changed the way a I saw the valley. That is another message, “The path out of a valley appears when you choose to see things differently.”

Take this small book along on you vacation while you have time to reflect and see if it doesn’t boost
you as a leader dealing with these interesting times.
